Mine Hill Distillery Review
While out and about with my wife in Litchfield County, we stumbled upon a wonderful and historic landmark in Roxbury Station (the original 1872 name of this small pocket of Roxbury), Mine Hill Distillery, a hidden gem nestled in the picturesque town of Roxbury, Connecticut.
Located right along the Shepaug River, this quaint and tucked away corner of New England history was certainly a sight to be seen! The recent cold front had frozen over the outer banks of the river and floating chunks of ice buoyed and lazily floated through the middle passage of water. It was a still and peaceful day, and a tasting of some bourbon whiskey seemed like just the right ingredient to warm us up inside.
As we made our way around the corner to the main entrance, we enjoyed the two-toned theme of the outside of the building. We were even further impressed by the pickaxe for a door handle on the barnwood doors, a tool that must have been over a hundred years old, as it was originally found on the property deep in the ground during a contractor's renovations.
The History
We were greeted by Sheila, one of Mine Hill's counter attendants, and she gave us a brief history lesson of Caleb's Town, the mining town that once was.
The cozy tasting room.
Before 1872, Roxbury Station used to be referred to as Caleb's Town as Sheila explained to us. The name, from Greek origin, refers to a mineral used in shoring up steel. Caleb's Town was a mining hub during Connecticut's heyday and a significant iron producer in the state.
An ancient chest transported valuable items in the 1800s.
The Spirits
The distillery overall was incredible and impeccable. Overall Mine Hill Distillery's operation was nothing short of impressive. Their vodka is distilled from honey, which gives it a smooth, slightly sweet taste that's unlike any other vodka you've tried. Their gin is made using a blend of botanicals, including juniper berries, coriander, and citrus, which gives it a complex, layered flavor.
But perhaps the standout spirit at Mine Hill Distillery is their whiskey. They offer several varieties, including a bourbon, a rye, and a single malt. The whiskey is aged in oak barrels, which gives it a rich, smoky flavor that's perfect for sipping on a cold winter's night.
Mine Hill's Amaro, or sweet vermouth, was simply delightful!
Final Thoughts
Mine Hill Distillery has its spirits in over 250 restaurants and liquor stores in Connecticut. They also have been featured in several publications and have received rave reviews from visitors, but it still feels like a well-kept secret. They are looking forward to being granted their cocktail license in the springtime so that they can plan larger gatherings and events on the property and serve them in the renovated train station.
